Die Karte des Khumbu-Himalaya (Ostnepal) 1 : 50 000

Abstract

On two expeditions with a team of cartographers, Erwin Schneider, in the context of a research project in the Nepalese Himalaya, used photogrammetric techniques to survey a large area of East Nepal. A 1 : 50 000 map in four sheets is in preparation. It reaches from the crest of the Himalaya, with Makalu, Lhotse, Mount Everest, Cho Oyu and Gaurisankar, south to the lower parts of the mountain range. The NE sheet (called 'Khumbu Himalaya' after the Khumbu area, home of the Sherpa people), has already been drawn by F. Ebster and is included as a supplement. The high montane landscape of Khumbu, and particularly the glaciers, the forest boundary and the settlements (permanent settlements, summer cultivation and transhumance settlements) are discussed with the help of the map and available literature.
