Abstract

In the German school system there has always been a close connection between history and geography. Contributing to the principle of regional geography school geography was required to convey information about world history as well, since history lessons were devoted to history of the fatherland alone. In the process of reforming geographical and other curricula, a process begun in 1970, new omnibus subjects like civics were created with the intention of combining historical, geographical and political aspects. This provides the opportunity of attending to historical geographical topics more advantageously than was hitherto possible. The author suggests subjects for the study of historical geography and supplies a list of examples of cases which can be included for the most varied of regions and dimensions. He emphasises the possibilities inherent in projects and educational excursions for historical geography in the schools. It is necessary to familiarise teacher training and in-service training programmes with these questions.
