Abstract

It was only in recent years, i. e. after the radical changes of agriculture in the post-war period, that the public have become aware of the necessity to redevelop and to renovate rural settlements. This applies in particular to the nucleated villages with their buildings grouped tightly together. The present paper tries to show from the standpoint of agriculture the various difficulties arising from the location of a farm within a nucleated village: the buildings are arranged too closely togehter and because of their arrangement they are often difficult to use economically; in addition, many buildings are too old and, in part, they have lost their former functions. Furthermore, the continuing orientation towards livestock farming gives rise to more and more serious conflicts with the non-agricultural population. The farmers consider the 'Immissionsschutzgesetz' (Protection Against Pollutants Act,1974) to be a particular threat to their existence within the villages because it limits the future expansion of their holdings.
