Abstract

Social and regional disparities have been and to some extent still are the main characteristics of Portugal's agriculture. This situation was one of the reasons for their evolution in 1974 and in consequence led to a radical agrarian reform, particularly in the southern part of the country. Since then many aims and tasks of the reform have been given up by various political leaders, so that today the whole project somehow seems to be forgotten. Nevertheless, the agro-social and regional structure of the Alentejo region has been influenced strongly by this reform. The concelho (county) of Alcacer do Sal is a good example because of its strong concentration of land property prior to the revolution. Even today large scale land property is dominant, but the agrarian reform laid the basis for the existence of a great state forest, cooperatives and new small holders (pequenos agricultores). Whether the cooperatives and the new smallholders will survive economically in the near future is uncertain
