Abstract

Dissolution of the Apartheid City? Case studies from Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth. The article analyses the development and structure of the South African Apartheid City and discusses the spatial impact of the recent political change in urban areas. The following changes are discussed in detail, considering examples of the regions of Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth: the formation of mixed racial residential districts (grey areas) in spite of continuing apartheid legislation; the acceptance of the so-called free trading areas, which were established to open the former white CBDs to non-white traders; the socio-economic differentiation of the town ships, which is documented in the construction of prestige housing projects as well as in the growth of extensive squatter settlements.
