This paper deals with the question of whether a change in circulation took place in Southern and Central Italy during the period from 1958-1988. The frequency and duration of sciroccos is regarded as an indicator. The basis for this study is provided by a quantitative definition of the occurrence of a scirocco. The calculations indicate an increase in frequency of sciroccos during the period of 1958-1988. During this time a change in the average duration of sciroccos in Italy seems to have taken place. This indicates a change in weather patterns in the western Mediterranean. A connection between the changes in circulation mentioned in this paper and the increased percentage of CO2 in the atmosphere seems likely.Downloads
