Containerization and new logistic systems have revolutionized international shipping patterns, so that urban waterfronts in port cities of the developed world are experiencing radical changes. In Copenhagen the active port zone have moved northwards, leaving only few maritime functions (e.g. ferry terminals) in the Inner Harbour. Due to the close links between harbour and city development the abandoned quays and industrial areas are situated in the center of agglomeration. The objective of the present article was to discuss consequences of the structural changes and examples for revitalization of the inner waterfront. It is shown that transformation processes in the port of Copenhagen, and especially the municipallity's attitude towards private and public building projects along the waterfront, have caused a seroius political debate. In spite of public demands from town planners and architects, a comprehensive plan for the Copenhagen waterfront and a strategy for revitalization is missing. The national parliament has discussed the port´s future, too, and the government has brought in a bill to establish a waterfront development company.Downloads
