Abstract

Since the realization of the different canal-colony projects in the Indus plain during the British rule, the agricultural production has been suffering from salinization and water-logging. In the past, the government of Pakistan already started several desalinization and drainage projects for stabilizing the main economic resource of the country, i. e. the agricultural production. The Indus-Left-Bank Outfall Drain has so far been a very expensive experiment. However, it promises to be a permanent solution of the problems of water-logging and salinization. The drain, which will be elongated to the Punjab, serves for trans porting the water to the Arabian Sea. Different horizontal and vertical methods of drainage, like tile-drainage, surface-drainage, drainage-tube-wells or scavenger-wells, are used. The rural population of the region will participate in this project by measures of the on farm water management -level.
